Leaving Jujuy and returning to Salta

The road keeps hugging the mountain sides, a few towns and villages dot the Quebrada de Humahuaca, we are descending back into 'Cardones' - cacti - altitudes...

The narrowest part of the Gorge, just about a hundred meters separate the hills on either side

Zig Zag formations on the side of the Gorge, colours in the mountains are repeated in a rock wall

Dramatic back ground to a little settlement in the bottom of the Gorge

Just a few cacti dot the arid hills....

San Salvador de Jujuy, the capital of Jujuy Province of Argentina

Just a short 'technical' stop in the centre of San Salvador, beside it's colonial style cathedral

Wall mural in San Salvador depicts Pachmama, the earth mother (still revered in rural Argentina). She is holding a few potatoes in her palms....

Here as every else in Argentina, mothers breast feed their babies in public. It does not matter, whether it is a Subway, a Transit Bus, a Park Bench, a Cafe....babies are happily feeding....

The idea of helmets has not yet made an impact in Argentina, parents cart their children on the back of bicycles, motorbike, mopeds without the benefit of head protection. For some unknown reason, the injury and death toll due to the lack of these things does not seem to be any higher than anywhere else...

Almost like Cuba...ancient rattle traps drive around held together by the Latin American equivalent of duct tape, and a lot of local knowledge of old engines.

Still in the vicinity of the Tropic of Capricorn, and mid day sun belts down directly from above.

Suburbs of Jujuy...the famous Argentinean railways in disuse. Here a mother brings home her children from school...

Instead of riding the train, people returning from work walk the rails...

Main drag in a suburb of San Salvador, Jujuy

And the cacti still grow only an inch per year....and we are on the return journey to a night of Folklorico in Salta....
