Madeira, Island of eternal Spring in the Atlantic

Morning in a narrow street of Funchal, Madeira

Fishmarket is open, and does not smell at all - the fish are fresh from the deep

A lot of steps to climb to pray in this cathedral...I found a little winding path and saved myself the stair case.

Gourds drying on red tiled roofs

Taking a Gondola up the mountains backing the town of Funchal, one enjoys a panoramic view of the city and the harbour beyond. Prinsendam is the smaller dark hulled ship on the right to the large white one (Norwegian Jade).

One of Madeira's claim to fame - fortified wine.

African Tulip trees bloom and give a lovely accent to the varied architecture of the city of Funchal.

Crooked streets lead to plazas, churches, cathedrals, palaces - and hundreds of small restaurants, whith tables and chairs on the intricately tiled pavement

Josef Ribkoff, of Montreal designer ilk, in one of those crooked little alleys...

Designs on street tiles....

Detail of Madeira lace...

A hand painted pottery jar....

Fishing boat heading out for a night's catch.

With a little run about delivering the crew, which arrived late for work.

Onboard visit of a Madeira Folkloric group, entertaining passengers with music, song and local dance.
