5 Jan 2012 - Murals and Messages

What shakes Buenos Aires today?
The big News is that Cristina's Thyroid Operation has been successfully completed. Local TV stations showed newpaper headlines of most Latin countries printing the politically important event. But, so it was paintedly mentioned, USA based newpapers kept silent.
Amado Boudou (apparently also a rock singer, and fetchingly handsome) is acting as head of state during her recuperation. Some local dailies expect him 'to tread water' until la Presidenta returns to office.
Portenos, with their love of public display, mounted a colourful demonstration (tents and all) in front of the Austral Hospital, wishing their populist Presidenta Speedy Recovery. A forest of sky blue and white flags, adorned with hand painted messages wave in the summer breeze.

Cristina's image as published by the Clarin, one of the most read daily newspapers in BsAs.

Oh, and eight people fell of a commuter train in Palermo. They were riding the roof and the steps - none dead, all injured.

Another rising cost for locals and visitors alike: Subte (Subway) fares are rising 127% as of tomorrow, 1.10 pesos to 2.50 pesos - result of transfer from subsidized federal to unsubsidized municipal government.
Federal coffers are emptying out - inflation around 30%.

One goes for a walk, finding solicited and unsolicited murals all over town. A veritable Guggenheim without the grand museum buildings.
Regardless of one's taste in art, one has to admire the variety and creativity of many of these al fresco art works...

Mythical creature - bird? mammal? insect? reptile? sponge?

Variation of traditional Filete art, with other than 'tango idols' as subjects

Art with a message indeed, book of instruction not required.

In most cases - government grants are not required either.

A lot of ugly graffiti covers just about every vertical space in Buenos Aires, especially visible on weekends, when 'persianas' (slatted roll down covers for shop windows) are lowered and shops are closed.

An upscale neighbourhood full of bistros, boutiques and beauty salons looks run down with primitive graffiti painted on the 'persianas', once weekend closures are in effect. However, there are some treasures to be found...and one never quite knows, whether they are the result of midnight vandalism or broad daylight creations of well known artists.
