Ravenna Mosaics of Jesus and the Magi

Ravenna again, there are so many treasures, let the photos more or less speak for themselves....apart from that SHAW, the internet provider is experiencing a little trouble with the enhanced version of their e-mail application. Hence weird blogs...

The Three Magi as wall mosaic
Gift of the Magi, note the facial expression of the king
Jesus sitting on his heavenly throne
For comparison - these mosaics are huge and cover the entire interior of cupolas and basilica walls
Detail of Jesus' hand
Baptism in the Jordan...Jesus is indeed naked
John the Baptist
Moses watching the baptism of yet anotherJesus standing waist deep in cristal clear Jordan water
John the Baptist in his furry outfit of a hermit in the desert

The beauty of the Mosaics of Ravenna defies description. One gazes at a cathedral dome, taking in a large scene of a biblical event, brilliantly coloured, perfectly proportioned, richly adorned...and then small details emerge which are not immediately visible as they are just part of the background. Gold mosaic tiles amongst the sunburst of colours glimmer seductively, each portrait and landscape is saturated with deep and vibrant colour. A feast for the eye.
Photos do not pay enough tribute to the artistry of these gems, however, a few photos of different subjects within the plethora of mosaics will hit the air in the next couple of blogs...
