Ravenna, Italy - Saints in Mosaics

Internet on a cruise ship being what it is - slow, unreliable and expensive - blogs will appear somewhat unreliably and with very little text. So here goes, totally out of sequence, but - who cares...
Ravenna is a treasure trove of Byzantine mosaics, many interiors of basilicas are covered with them, and one sits and marvels at the incredible beauty of them all. Here a few samples....Saints...

Saitn Vitalis
Abel, the First Son
Good looking chap...
It is astonishing, to see the facial features so well defined in what is nothing more than a collection of tiny colourful tiles
The gowns are beautifully detailed, every fold reflects the underlying physique

It appears as if this Saint is carrying a machine gun...

Thius Saint's expression is rather curious....
This gentleman is part of a larger mosaic depicting the baptiosm of Jesus in the Jordan by John the Baptist....
Note the intertwining dolphins between portraits of saints....
Detail of a mosaic portrait of Saint Thaddeus....
