24 March 2012 - Sevilles Magnificient Cathedral

The third largest Christian Church, in the World is the Giralda (St Peters in Rome is the largest, St. Paul in London is the second largest) stands on the former site of the Almohad Mosque (12th century) in Seville, Andalusia, Spain.
The square foundations of the mosque (Islamic footprint versus cruciform for Christian footprint) were maintained when a huge Gothic edifice was built by King Ferdinand in 1401 which was completed 125 years later. Today, the church is filled with impressive art, rich paintings and splendid sculpture, some of them I tried to convey in these definitely inadequate photos.
Columbus is buried in this cathedral (DNA apparently validated the 200 grams of what is left of Cristobal Colon to be authentic). Bits and pieces of his remains apparently are in Dominica and Havana. However, in a place of honour inside the cathedral, four giant statues hold up an ornately decorated 'coffin' - and that's where the explorer is resting now.
