Highs and Lows....

Buenos Aires, a city of contrasts...

U-2 performed it's first concert in Argentina to thousands of fans in La Plata. The citizens turned their backyards into parking-lots (10pesos fee per car) and mini-bars for Quilmes beer, Coke and Water sales.

In various barrios Chinese shop keepers were murdered by the Chinese Mafia.

Andrea Bocelli, the famous blind Italian tenor, sings to another sell out crowd.

3000 speeding tickets isued during the last long weekend - 16 traffic deaths on the jammed roads leading from Buenos Aires, mostly drink and speed combination.

Venezuelan Chavez signs trade agreements with Argentinian Kirchner.

Messi - an Argentinian Soccer player - is NOT injured, and ready to play.

Inflation 30% year over year....

Construction is booming - historic low rise building facades fall before construction of high rise apartment buildings.

Truck drivers are given a 27 % pay rise.

Unionized SUBTE-workers shut down a subway line for an entire day - but open up again at the stroke of 16:00 (4 p.m.) to accommodate rush hour.

The Madres of Plaza Maya are celebrating as five torturers of the 'Dirty War' years are condemmed to life long prison terms.

Argentina does NOT shine in Soccer tournament with USA ...Madrona's training method is blamed.

Bimbo marries Buble in Buenos Aires, additional wedding feast planned for Vancouver Golf Club - who are those people???

Government censores the Clarin, daily newspaper. Censorship said to be greatest threat to democracy -Non censorship allegedly greatest threat to present government - citizenship is prostesting - after all election campaigns are in full swing.
Almost sounds like Canada - Tories, Liberals, NDP'ers and Greens - all fighting each other to get elected for the 'Best of the People'.
At least they have not muzzled the Globe and Mail.

Street resident - mattresses, plastic stools, brooms, clothing, garbage disposal container.

He has been living here since weeks, just a few houses away from the local police station. Built-in protection I suppose.

Palacio de Aguas Corrientes - Palace for Water Supply.

This ornate edifice covering an entire city block used to manage the City's Drinking water supply. It now houses - amongst other things - a bathroom museum. It is said to have the largest collection of historic toilet bowls in the world. A magnificient shell to house a display of a rather inglorious item.

Congresso...Sidewalk vendors, mostly indeginous people earn their daily empanada that way.

Stairway with elegant wrought iron bannisters in the Palacio Bardolo - 16 floors of it.

My trivial highs and lows?

I can walk - sort of, but I cannot dance. The effects of the Areco Incident take longer to fade away than I thought.

In the meantime - here is Mi Buenos Aires Querido.
