14. May 2010 - Remembering Antarctica

Summerfun in Antarctica for Adelie Penguins.
These species of penguins was named after the Queen who reigned during the time of the French explorer Admiral Dumont d'Urville. A part of Antarctica was named after him around 1840.
These little birds are good swimmers, they can reach up to 25km/ 13knots under water. They grow to about 70cm in height and approximate 4 kg in weight. There heads are totally black, except for a white ring around their eyes. 2.5 Million pairs frolic in the coastal regions of the white and blue Continent. They reproduce in the litoral zones and nearby islands in ice free zones. They feed on krill, fish and amphipods. They are quite curageous, and stand their ground when approached by humans.
When cruising around the Antarctic Peninsular, apart from providing an olfactory and visual spectacle near their crowded breeding grounds, they can be spotted on iceflows and icebergs and are a source of constant delight. Sometimes they line up on their floating homes, and then stage a mass dive into the crystal clear waters, where they swim and dive like a pod of littly feathered dolphins.
