And the Winner is......

Federal Elections in Argentina
After an initial vote in October 2015, two candidates were left to face the 'balotage', the run off vote, and election of 22 November 2015: Scioli, adhering to the ideas of Peron, and Macri, promoting change.

Scioli and Macri, Presidential Candidates

And the winner, beating Scioli by about 3% of the popular vote, translating into about 4,000,000 votes, has been declared at around 10:00 pm at the end of the voting day:
Mauricio Macri
(51.40% for Macri, 48.60% for Scioli)

A few moments after being declared 'President Elect' Mauricio Macri and his family and team celebrate their victory

El Obelisco was the scene of all-out celebrations as only Argentinians can celebrate...

May Argentina look forward to Peace, Happiness, Security and Well Being for All its Citizens...

Tango Orchestra Ledesma at El Planetario de Palermo

Why not listen to great tango music, at an unusual venue, The Planetarium of Buenos Aires in Palermo, reclining in a nearly horizontal position in a comfortable upholstered seat, watching an illusion of sky, moon and the universe pulsating to the music in the ample dome of the Planetarium?? Ergo - I go! As and additional benefit, the performance is gratis - albeit I made a two hour 'paseo' there and back earlier in the afternoon, to pick up a free ticket at the 'boleteria' of the planetarium
The Planetarium, it is located within a series of parks, which include the famous RoseGarden of Palermo. A wonderful Friday afternoon for a 'paseo', not too hot under a brilliantly clear azure sky....

The nearest Intersection, guarded by yet another Argentinian Hero...

The 'estrellas' (stars) may be illusory, however, one may imagine oneself travelling through space soaring on a satellite....

The Program of the day:

¡Un show imperdible!

One walks past the Zoo. Inside the fence, a paper sign on a lemon tree asking 'not to pick the lemons, as they are part of my'salary'...

The zoo flamingos (real ones, not theplastic version) don't care..

....neither do the local carriage horses, awaiting their turn to clip clop around the streets of the parks

..a bored and sleepy miniature pony awaits younger zoo visitors...

May the Show begin.....
Being a planetarium the idea is to keep everything pretty well in the dark, to enable the audience to better appreciate the show projected on the dome. The musicians had tiny lamps attached to their music stands, barely enough light to figure out what they were playing. To makes sure they all looked at the same piece of music, they called out the title to each other before striking off.

Unfortunately the opportunities to capture band or background on camera were scarce, mainly due to the fact that ambient light was even more scarce. The spectacular display of moving images of space, projected to the beat and according to the 'emotional content' of the piece, could not be eternalized in photos. Apart from treating us to fantastic journeys through the universe, images of tango dancers, scenes of Buenos Aires, abstract designs, mandalas...all pulsated with almost vertiginous movements above one's head. It was difficult to maintain focus: are we observing sound accompanied by images, or images accompanies by sound?

For one and a half hour the great orchestra kept the audience enthralled. With the next to last piece it brought the audience to tears (as much as one could detect in the dark) with a version of Adios Nonino full of emotion and sadness.
How else could a performance closely connected to the music of Piazolla end, but with a rousing rendition of Libertango....before we all filed out into the pleasantly warm nigh of Buenos Aires.

Out into the night, heading towards the nearest stop of a 'collectivo' (public bus)
that takes me back to Plaza Italia and a short walk home.

Time to visit the 'other hemisphere' down south in lovely Argentina.
Among many temporary good byes, one says adios to one's four-legged friends, with a nicker on one side and a couple of apples on the other, and heads off towards the airport.

The last sunrise over Saanich Peninsular (just above Victoria Airport) which I will see for a little while - now the journey begins: two days of transit lounges and airplane seats.
Alliance Airport Lounge in Sao Paulo, Brasilia....new, airy, spacious, comfortable....
Hours and hours in lounges - but with added benefits: comfortable chairs, Wifi access gratis, plenty of reading materials and enough buffet food to keep a passenger from dying of starvation, as well as a bar/cafe, should one need to 'freshen up' the spirit.
A long sleep between Toronto and Sao Paulo, and one arrives to summer temperatures (at least for now) and the chaotic life, so invigorating, of Buenos Aires.
It would not be Buenos Aires, if a protest or a strike would not close a major intersection or part of highway in the city....things are still 'normal' here

No complaints about the temperatures....
Sunday Evening at the Sueno Porteno with all the 'papusas' lined up for the obligatory group photo - ours truly being one of the 'papusas'...

Despite the long journey, enough energy remained to attend a couple of milongas (dances) to meet old tanguero friends again and dance the evenings away one tanda (set of dances) after another.
Proper footwear to navigate along Buenos Aires sidewalks...
Quite some noticeable changes for the better on the streets of Palermo, the district of Buenos Aires where my temporary domicile is located. There is less garbage (the garbage bins which the city introduced last year are actually being used, and homeless people have moved out of the recycle bins), there is less dog poop, even fewer cracks in the sidewalks (but still enough to keep ones feet glued to the ground) and wheel chair ramps at intersections (albeit driving a scooter or wheelchair on the sidewalks proper could be a bit of a challenge).
'Wall Art' slowly replaces graffiti of old...

Palermo is being 'reconstructed', some buildings become condo high rises, others are being renovated in the historic style of the original design.

Scioli on the left, and Macri to the right
Argentina is gearing up to a federal election. After the first ballot about a month ago, two candidates for President emerged. Scioli and Macri are running head to head. The first ever Presidential Debate in Argentina's history took place one week before the 'run off' vote (obligatory for 32 million Argentinos) which is going to happen on the 22 November. The very well moderated debate was watched by millions of voters, who are apparently almost equally divided on deciding who 'won' the debate. After this coming Sunday - Argentina will be led by a new President...the nation is holding its collective breath.

In the meantime....lets tango on and cheer on River, Boca and all the other equipos de futbol of Argentina...Gooooooooollllll!

Paris, November 2015

Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite -for the whole world....

The World is in Mourning for the victims of the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris.
More than a hundred people died, several hundreds were injured, and eight billion of us are suffering. How to stop the attackers, how to solve the conflict, how to reconcile opposing ideologies and beliefs with almost insurmountable differences......
Denis, the anti terrorist dog who died on the job....

There are no words, we are all deeply affected and our thoughts are with the victims and their grieving families....

Halloween at Duncan's Farmers Market

31 October and it is Halloween: the day and night of carved pumpkins, trick or treats, and general dress up for young and old. Not too many ghosts are roaming the farmer's market, but instead a small army of kids in costume (and parents as well to lend moral support) flit between the market stands and enjoy the admiration of shoppers when mounting the town square music gazebo to show off their disguises.

Happy Halloween...
