Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jesuit, former Chemistry Student, priest since his 21st year, Fan of San Lorenzo soccer team, avid reader of classic literature, lover of Tango: Jorge Mario Bergoglio, son of an Italian railway worker and an Italian housemaid, today became Pope of all the Catholics around the world. He is the first Latin American to rise to this honour, the first hailing from all the Americas. He is also the first Jesuit who achieves this office.
He is known as a genuinely humble man, with very simple tastes: he did not live in his Archbishop's mansion but in a flat beside the cathedral, he cooked his own meals, and travelled the Subte and the Collectivos (Subway and buses) just like any other Porteno. He lives what he preaches, and is admired for his high morals and deeply felt values.
When he became Cardinal he used the vestments of his predecessor instead of ordering new ones.
Today, during his first appearance, he stood humbly and modestly, obviously moved and aware of the tremendous weight that has been put on his shoulders.
Some of his first words were, that the conclave took place in Rome, but had to go almost to the end of the world to elect a new Pope.
Argentinians are delirious, just after the announcement the Buenos Aires Cathedral started to fill with people - a mass will be held at 19:00. One very happy citizen remarked: We knew that God is Argentinean, and now we have an Argentinean Pope.
Viva El Papa!
