End of June in Cowichan Valley

Still waiting for the sun, and even more so for some warmth. The odd stint of summer weather brings us outdoors in droves, wondering and gazing...

Searching for a four leaf clover....

Traffic on Cowichan Bay Road....
...which we are supposed to share....
Cowichan Bay Fish Store, one of the best on Vancouver Island.
Even the entry door is adorned with locally made large hammered metal shrimps
Floating Mansion in Cowichan Bay
Cowichan Bay Cultural Centre, brand new, not a nail in the entire building, all beams - if curved - came pre formed straight from a tree.
Exhibiting hand carved boats, old photographs, paintings as well as staging a few musical evenings.
A Wooden Boats Association creates intricate examples of small dories laid up by hand, and lovingly varnished to perfection. You may win one!
Hilary, which is the name of a Cowichan Valley dairy farmer, raises goats and cows in his bucolic fields. He converts their milk into delicious hand crafted cheeses, which he sells at Saturday's Duncan farmers market as well as his Cowichan Bay licensed bistro - which affords a spectacular view over the water.
Lion's Mane jelly fish are competing with the red hull of Millennium Dragon

Saltspring Island on a foggy morning as seen from my kitchen
Table Mountain with table cloth, Northern Hemisphere Style....in Capetown in Africa, the cloth flows over the table mountain top...but here, funky Saltspring Island just does the opposite, it swirls around sea level.

Deer Friends....

It is going to be an everyday occurence...the whole deer population seems to havd taking a liking to my garden....
This is a girl which does NOT have any babies this year
One of the twins, checking out the backyard
They chase each other and run around like a couple of puppies
Hide and seek around the Rhododendron bushes...
Even at this tender age, there is not the least concern about any humans hanging around

Next generation of Constant Gardeners....

My latest addition - a peony, which distinguishes herself by being unpalatable to all the Bambis of the world.
Here they are, all seven blooms defying my four legged gardeners.
But, here comes another generation....and each one has a few new acquired tastes...
About the size of a Chiuaua Dog, just with slightly longer legs...
All fluff, and very little substance
.
Curious, and getting trained that this particular community consists of two legged wimps - ergo no need to be at all shy
The worst that can happen, is that some frustrated gardener claps his hands loudly or points the garden hose towards these little heart breakers...
Mother looks in excellent shape, fattening herself and her kids on an exquisite selection of flowering shrubs.

Still waiting for the dog days of summer....

Life in the slow lane.
There is nothing particularly riveting happening whilst waiting for summer to arrive, so here are a few images (photographers unknown) to lighten the dreary mood outside.

Fresh Spring Shine on Millennium...

Oh surprise....we had a sunny day here in British Columbia! The Moose (nick name of the gentleman who polishes boat hulls from a supine position whilst he is laying on a dock) brought his tools and put a summer gleam on red Millennium.

After all this shining up, the fenders look as if they need a scrubbing....it never ends.

The jackstay is mirrored in the bow....
The longest day - summer solstice - is only a couple fo days away, but our weather seems to be stuck in late winter/

Exactly my feeling...

Now, one just needs a little summer weather and possibly smooth jointed knees like this guy seems to have, and one will be dancing on air.....

Duncan's Farmer's Market

Farmer's Markets, Saltspring Island has the most famous one. Tourists pay a steep ferry fare to visit downtown Ganges, where they may browse amongst everything organic, ceramic, botanic, and esoteric.
BUT, it is not the only farmer's market, Duncan stages one every Saturday and it is pretty impressive!

A little square beside Duncan's town hall is closed to traffic, as well as part of a town road. The town's gazebo hosts a few musician,  and dozens of tents serve as make shift stores, which offer a weird and wonderful range of 'must have goodies'

Party Collars - for your pets. Some with bows, some with lace, some quite 'formal', some a little whimsical - just a thing a fickle owner needs to accommodate the day's dress code. Only 20 Dollars for Duncan Haute Couture for the little four legged friends.

Just a little part of the market...

Muskoka Lawn Chair in a rather odd location...

Patriotic Dog Collar as modelled by a canine mannequin
Who would not like to brush his teeth above a bathroom sink, hand painted with blossoming flowers?
It's not Burka, or a veil or a scarf - NO, this is the latest edition of 'hair extensions' of the beady kind.
One better than a Tilley Hat....feathers and silk roses
And for the aspiring Air Canada Pilot - training wheels
It's BC after all - artistic pet feeders of hand carved wood, hand thrown pottery and hand painted decor - I did not ask the price...
Alternative Art - eco friendly use of fire wood
No you don't need glasses - this is a rural scene created from felt
And for the ecofriendly house wife (oops home maker) a few pot scrubbers made from natural materials. Who would want to deface one of these cute thingamajigs to clean a pot???
There was a line up of food stands, with regular hot dogs and hamburgers missing from the menu. BUT - farm smoked meats, home made sausages, spelt bread, Middle Eastern flat breads, home made cheeses, jams satisfied any hungry shoppers
And the kids played music - pretty good at that!!!
Canadian - Eh?
Flowers, vegetables, herbs....bedding plants for gardeners, who DON'T harbour herds of deer.
Hand carved wooden flutes...

There you go, it's not the HIGH COUNTRY but the HIGHLAND CATTLE, just in case one gets mixed up.

Doggie Toys in every shape...

Doggies in every shape as well
Duncan used to be known as a pretty dismal community, where never anything exciting or fun would see the light of day. Well, it is now a bit of a hidden gem, as downtown is being renovated, historic buildings brought back to life and the town scape evolves into quite an eclectic little centre of great shops (very good clothing stores, some mouthwatering bakeries, a few neat cafes, some highly regarded bistros and restaurants, a few voluminous book stores, a brew pub, and a host of specialty stores to boot)
And no high rise yet, one can even find a few 'historic' dwellings, which haven't been touched since they had their first brick or beam placed into the ground.
Next time, when you drive through Duncan along strip mall alley, make a detour and cross to 'the other side of the tracks' past the historic little railway station and abide a while...it's worth the time!
Let's say Good Bye to the Farmer's Market with Hillary's Cheese - one of the best cheese makers in Cowichan Valley, and all from happy Holstein Cows, who graze serenely in this farmer's back fields.
